ECOSY supports SOLIDAR appeal for support to Haiti
The 7.0 magnitude earthquake that took place on tuesday has claimed over 100.000 deaths and has left the Haitian population of 9 million people homeless and in need of water, food and medical assistance. Relief efforts are severly strained by lack of material and live-threatening situations in the streets of Haiti.
United Nations Secretary Generan Ban Ki Moon has asked the community for $562 million in a coordinated relief effort as well as 1500 police and 2000 troops to reinforce the peace keepers already in the country. In an emergency meeting in Brussels, the Council of the EU and the European Commission have committed to €122 emergency aid and €200 long term aid.
ECOSY calls on the the international community to commit and coordinate rescue efforts to help 9 million Haitians.
