ECOSY Statement on Human Rights Day

Today is Human Rights Day. The focus this year is on non-discrimination. Despite the well-known phrase stated in the Declaration on Human Rights, which says that "All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights," millions of people are facing discrimination also in the 21st century.

The High Commissioner is celebrating Human Rights Day in South Africa, and stresses her compassion for universal human rights by saying: "Our main objective is to help promote discrimination-free societies and a world of equal treatment for all"

The realisation of all Human Rights, no matter where you are in the world, must be fulfilled. The Human Rights includes different dimensions, and all dimensions need to be taken into account in the political landscape. Human rights are including social, economic and cultural rights as well as civil and political rights.

"Fighting for human rights has always been one of the main priorities for our political family, including ECOSY, as a whole. Without human rights, a social democratic and socialist society will never be achieved. Our struggle for human rights must be lively and strong, and even though we are facing violations on human rights throughout the world, we must never loose our political compass to fight discrimination no matter what," says Johan Büser (Vice President of ECOSY from Sweden).
