Statement by the president of ECOSY:
Brussels – 20 October 2004
Demanding a Different European Commission
In the coming days you will vote on a new European Commission for five year term. We, progressive youngsters from all over the European Union, demand a European Commission different from the one Mr. Barroso propose.
We believe in a European Union with a more powerful European Parliament, as it is the only European body elected by its citizens. We also believe in a European Union that respects diversity and at the same time fundamental human rights. In this context we are deeply concerned about the nomination of Mr. Rocco Buttiglione as the new Commissioner for Justice, Freedom and Security.
We note that as Italian Justice Minister he voted against the project of creating a European warrant, which makes him a surprising choice for this portfolio. However, what makes him a shocking choice is the publicly stated convictions that Mr. Buttiglione’s holds in relation to women, sexual minorities and refugees.
These views are not only discriminatory, but, inflammatory. While we respect the diversity of the many strands of thought within the European Council & Parliament, we cannot see how Mr. Buttiglione can separate his convictions from his proposed job as the new Justice Commissioner. We strongly fear he is likely to display a clear prejudice in the execution of his duties. It is a recipe for many serious conflict of interest scenarios.
He is therefore unfit to serve in one of the highest offices of the European Union. The lack of belief in our common European values as Mr. Buttiglione expressed during the hearings in the European parliament is astonishing.
We therefore ask you to vote against his candidature as Commissioner for Justice, Freedom & Security. Unfortunately, under the current system of procedures, that means you will have to vote against the entire Commission.
As a parliamentarian and as a parliament you can show the power you have. Our common values also mean something in practice
USE YOUR POWER AND VOTE AGAINST THIS COMMISSION.
We wish you all the best with your decision during the upcoming days.
Anders LINDBERG
ECOSY President
